Heat pump installation in Sheffield
Find MCS certified heat pump installers who cover Sheffield and compare their designs.
Sheffield's hills affect heat pump design. A house in Dore or Stannington is several hundred feet higher than one by the Don, and colder and windier in winter. An air source heat pump works in both, but the design temperature and the size of the unit should reflect where the house actually sits.
About a fifth of the city's homes date from before 1919, many of them stone or solid brick. These need careful heat loss work.
Sheffield at a glance
- Water hardness
- Soft. Yorkshire Water's 2024 results rate the Sheffield City and Hillsborough zone as soft (19.2 mg/l calcium) and the Neepsend zone, covering Crookesmoor and Broomhall, as soft (7.8 mg/l). Loxley and Stannington are moderately soft (21.4 mg/l). Source
- How homes are heated
- 79.2% of Sheffield households heat with mains gas only, 7.3% with electricity only and 2.1% (about 4,900 households) from a communal or district heat network. 355 households use oil alone. Source
- District energy network
- Veolia runs the 44 km Sheffield District Energy Network, fed by the city's Energy Recovery Facility. It supplies heat to over 125 commercial and public buildings, including City Hall, the universities and Weston Park Hospital. Source
- House types
- 38.0% of households live in a semi, 26.0% in a terrace and 15.0% in a detached house. About 21% live in a flat. Source
- Age of homes
- 19.0% of Sheffield's homes were built before 1919, and 21.4% between 1919 and 1939, according to the Valuation Office Agency's March 2024 count. Source
- Local grant
- Sheffield's Warm Homes: Local Grant is delivered with E.ON for privately owned or privately rented homes rated EPC D to G. Applicants need income of £36,000 or less, a means-tested benefit or a qualifying postcode. It does not fund new boilers. Source
- Energy ratings
- About 49% of homes with an EPC in Sheffield are rated band D or below (median score 69, band C), against 47% across England. Based on certificates lodged in the 10 years to March 2025. Source
Designing for a cold site
An MCS installer designs the system for an outside temperature typical of the coldest days at your location. Ask what design temperature they used. A unit sized for a mild lowland site may struggle on a moorland edge.
Insulation first: lofts, cavities and draught-proofing reduce the size and cost of the system.
Planning and conservation areas
Most houses can have an air source heat pump under permitted development, as long as it is no bigger than 1.5 cubic metres and at least a metre from the boundary. In conservation areas, such as Broomhall and Nether Edge, a unit cannot face a road. Listed buildings need consent.
Grants
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 off an air or ground source heat pump. Sheffield's Warm Homes: Local Grant, delivered with E.ON, can fund heat pumps for lower-income households in homes rated EPC D to G. It doesn't fund gas boilers. Pre-grant prices for a typical installation are in our heat pump cost guide.
Sheffield homes and what they need
Victorian terraces on the hillsides
Back yards are small and often on a different level. Wall brackets can lift the unit, but the installer must check noise for neighbours.
Interwar and postwar semis
These are the easiest candidates: gardens, cavity walls and space for a cylinder.
Large stone villas in the western suburbs
High heat loss and big rooms may need a larger unit or two. Radiators often need replacing with bigger ones, and insulation of stone walls needs care to avoid trapping moisture.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Sheffield work across areas including Crookes, Walkley, Hillsborough, Ecclesall, Nether Edge, Broomhill, Sharrow, Heeley, Dore and Stocksbridge.
Questions people in Sheffield ask
Can I connect to the district heating network instead?
Veolia's network mainly serves commercial and public buildings in the city centre. Most homes can't connect, so a heat pump is the usual low-carbon option.
Will soft water affect a heat pump?
In a good way. The hot water cylinder coil and immersion heater scale up less in Sheffield than in hard water areas, so they keep working efficiently for longer.
