Heat pump installation in Doncaster

Find MCS certified installers covering Doncaster and compare designs and prices.

Doncaster's housing suits heat pumps better than most big towns in the north. Semis and detached houses make up almost 70% of households, most with gardens, and flats, which are the hardest homes to convert, are only about 8.6%. Bungalows, common on estates across the borough, are often easy to heat evenly from a single unit.

The best financial case is in the villages off the gas grid, where homes heat with oil, bottled gas or coal.

Off-gas homes

The 2021 Census counted about 1,190 Doncaster households on oil alone, about 1,330 on tank or bottled gas and about 870 on solid fuel. These homes can get £7,500 from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme plus a £1,500 top-up until March 2027 if they have no mains gas. Replacing coal or oil with a heat pump also removes deliveries and fuel storage.

Getting the design right

An MCS installer must calculate heat loss room by room. Post-war semis often need cavity wall and loft insulation topping up first, and some radiators upsizing. Bungalows have a large roof area, so loft insulation matters even more.

You will need space for a hot water cylinder. In Doncaster's hard water, ask whether scale protection is included on the cylinder's cold feed.

Grants and planning

Most installations on houses and bungalows are permitted development if the unit is under 1.5 cubic metres and at least a metre from the boundary. Doncaster Council's Warm Homes: Local Grant can fund low-carbon heating and insulation for lower-income households in privately owned homes. Our heat pump cost guide shows typical prices before grants.

Doncaster homes and what they need

Interwar and postwar semis

The side passage or back garden usually has room for the outdoor unit. Keep it away from the shared boundary to stay inside the permitted development rules.

Red-brick terraces in town and the former pit villages

Yards are small, and solid walls lose more heat. Insulation and bigger radiators may be needed before a heat pump makes sense.

Bungalows

Single-storey homes with short pipe runs are good candidates. Underfloor heating in an extension or a refit works especially well.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Doncaster work across areas including Bessacarr, Balby, Armthorpe, Bentley, Wheatley, Hatfield, Thorne, Mexborough, Conisbrough and Tickhill.

Questions people in Doncaster ask

Will a heat pump cost more to run than gas?

It depends on the design and your tariff. A well-designed system with a good efficiency figure can cost similar to gas, and usually less than oil or LPG.
