Damp and mould treatment in Northampton
Find damp specialists who cover Northampton. A good one finds the moisture source before treating any mould.
Mould in Northampton's estate houses often appears in the same places: top corners of bedrooms, around window reveals and behind wardrobes on outside walls. Those are cold bridges, spots where the wall is colder than the rest of the room, so moisture condenses there first.
In older terraces, the causes are more varied, and surveyors need to rule out leaks and penetrating damp.

Find the cause
A proper survey uses a moisture meter at several heights, checks outside walls, gutters and downpipes, and looks at ventilation. Condensation mould usually appears high up and in corners. Rising damp shows as a tide mark low on the wall, and is less common than many companies suggest.
Ask for the findings in writing with readings and photos.
If you rent
About one in three households in West Northamptonshire rents, privately or socially. Tell your landlord in writing. Social landlords must now investigate damp and mould within set deadlines under Awaab's Law. Private landlords must deal with serious hazards, and West Northamptonshire Council can step in if they don't.
Keep copies of everything you send and photos with dates. If your landlord blames your lifestyle, ask what they have checked first: ventilation, insulation and leaks.
Cleaning and prevention
Use a mould remover on small areas, wearing gloves and a mask. The method is set out in our guide to removing mould from walls. Then reduce moisture: lids on pans, the extractor on when cooking and showering, and clothes dried outside or in a vented dryer.
Northampton homes and what they need
Planned estates and newer developments
Concrete lintels and thin early cavity insulation create cold bridges around windows. Internal insulated plasterboard on the worst walls can help.
Interwar and postwar semis
Check the damp-proof course hasn't been bridged by a raised patio or driveway.
Red-brick Victorian terraces
Solid brick needs to breathe. Cement render or gloss paint outside can trap moisture in the wall.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Northampton work across areas including Abington, Kingsthorpe, Duston, Weston Favell, Far Cotton, Kingsley, Spinney Hill, Upton, Wootton and Moulton.
Questions people in Northampton ask
Can I get help with insulation to stop condensation?
West Northamptonshire's Warm Homes: Local Grant funds insulation and draught-proofing for eligible homes rated EPC D to G. It doesn't pay for mould treatment.
Is black mould dangerous?
It can trigger asthma and allergies, and young children, older people and anyone with breathing problems are most at risk. Don't leave it to spread.
