Mould and damp removal in Coventry
A specialist finds the cause, whether it's condensation, a leak or rain getting through the wall, and fixes that before treating the mould.
In Coventry's terraces, many of them let as shared houses, condensation is the usual culprit. Several people's showers, cooking and washing go into a house built for one family, often with a fan that doesn't work.
Coventry at a glance
- Types of home
- 39.9% of Coventry households live in a terraced house, the largest single type in the city. 30.1% live in a semi, 15.7% in a purpose-built block of flats and 11.6% in a detached house. Source
- Private renting
- 24.7% of Coventry households rented privately in 2021 and 17.0% rented from a social landlord. Source
- Local grant
- Coventry City Council is working with E.ON and Act on Energy on a Warm Homes: Local Grant for owners and private renters in Hillfields, Upper Stoke and Lower Stoke. Measures can include wall insulation, solar panels or a heat pump, at no cost to the household. Source
Diagnosis first
A proper damp survey records humidity, measures moisture in the walls and checks gutters, downpipes, pointing and the damp course outside. You should get a written finding on the cause.
Be wary of a firm that offers chemical damp-proofing on the first visit before it has ruled out condensation and leaks.
Thermal imaging is useful in older terraces, because it shows cold spots where insulation is missing or a wall is wet behind the plaster.
Private and student tenants
24.7% of Coventry households rent privately. Report damp and mould to your landlord or agent in writing with photos and dates. The landlord must fix the structure and anything that causes damp, such as a broken fan or leaking gutter.
If nothing happens, the council's private sector housing team can inspect the property.
Social housing
About 17% of Coventry households rent from a housing association. Since 27 October 2025, Awaab's Law has required social landlords to investigate significant damp and mould within 10 working days and make it safe within 5 working days of that.

Damp in Coventry homes
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Look for blocked air bricks, soil above the damp course and leaking rear downpipes. Bathrooms in rear extensions are common mould spots.
Interwar and postwar semis
Postwar system-built houses can have cold concrete panels where mould forms at joints. Gable walls with filled cavities sometimes take rain across.
Postwar blocks and city-centre flats
Cold window reveals and ceiling edges in older blocks attract mould. Roof leaks above top-floor flats are the freeholder's to fix.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Coventry work across areas including Earlsdon, Allesley, Cheylesmore, Tile Hill, Wyken, Radford, Finham, Canley, Binley and Styvechale.
Questions people in Coventry ask
Can I get help with the cost?
Owners and private renters in Hillfields, Upper Stoke and Lower Stoke may get insulation and ventilation through the council's Warm Homes: Local Grant. One-off mould cleaning isn't covered.
Does bleach kill mould?
It whitens the surface but often leaves roots in porous plaster and sealant. A mould remover made for the job works better, and none of them stops mould returning if the cause stays.
