Boiler repair and gas engineers in Hull

Describe the fault and we pass it to Gas Safe registered engineers who work across Hull, Hessle, Cottingham and the villages.

Limescale is behind a large share of boiler faults in Hull. With water at roughly 370 mg/l as calcium carbonate in parts of the city, a combi without scale protection can start to struggle within a few years. The good news is that scale faults are usually repairable.

Hull at a glance

Water hardness
Very hard. Yorkshire Water's Hull Central West zone (Newland, Sculcoates, Stepney, Dairycoates) averaged 148.4 mg/l calcium in 2024, about 370 mg/l as calcium carbonate. Kirk Ella and Hessle averaged 128.4 mg/l and Cottingham 145.3 mg/l (both very hard); Bransholme and Sutton 107 mg/l (hard). Source
Renting
Only 48.3% of Hull households owned their home in 2021. 27.0% were social tenants (18.9% renting from the council) and 22.0% rented from a private landlord or letting agency. Source
Landlord gas checks
Landlords must have a Gas Safe registered engineer check every gas appliance and flue every 12 months and keep the records for 2 years. Source

Gas smell or CO alarm

Leave the house straight away and call 0800 111 999, the National Gas Emergency Service, from outside. Don't use light switches or anything that could spark. If a carbon monoxide alarm goes off, open windows on your way out.

Signs of scale

Hot water that surges hot and cold, a shower that never gets properly hot, a boiler that cuts out partway through running a bath, or a kettling noise from the boiler. These usually point to scale in the plate heat exchanger or around the flow sensors.

An engineer can descale or replace the plate heat exchanger. Ask them to fit or service a scale reducer afterwards, or the fault will come back.

If your heating works but the hot water doesn't, the diverter valve may be sticking. Scale plays a part there too.

Other common faults

Low pressure: if the gauge reads under 1 bar, top up with the filling loop, following the boiler pressure guide on this site. If it keeps dropping, call an engineer.

Boiler won't fire in a freeze: check the white plastic condensate pipe outside. If it's iced up, warm water poured along it and a reset often does the trick.

If you rent

More than a quarter of Hull households rent from a social landlord, and over a fifth from a private one. Repairs are the landlord's responsibility. Council tenants report to Hull City Council's repairs service. Private tenants should report in writing and keep a copy.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Hull work across areas including The Avenues, Newland Park, Hessle, Cottingham, Anlaby, Kirk Ella, Willerby, Sutton-on-Hull, Bransholme and Kingswood.

Questions people in Hull ask

Repair or replace?

If a combi under 10 years old has scaled up, repairing it and adding scale protection is usually sensible. If it's 15 or more and needs a major part, compare with the new boiler cost guide on this site.

Can I descale it myself with a product from the shop?

Not the boiler. Opening it up is Gas Safe work. Descaling taps and shower heads yourself is fine.

Why does my shower go cold when someone runs a tap?

A combi shares its hot water output between outlets, so some drop is normal. A big drop that's got worse over time often means scale is restricting flow through the boiler, which an engineer can check.
