Heat pump installation in Middlesbrough

Swap a gas boiler for an air source heat pump. We pass your request to MCS certified installers, which you need to claim the grant.

Nearly six in ten Middlesbrough households lived in a semi or detached house in 2021. Most have a garden, a side passage or a driveway wall where an outdoor unit can sit, and an airing cupboard for a cylinder. That makes a large part of the borough a practical fit for heat pumps.

In Middlesbrough, an air or ground source heat pump attracts a £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. There's no income test.

Grants for lower-income homes

Middlesbrough Council agreed in November 2025 to join the Warm Homes: Local Grant, with Darlington Borough Council running it on Middlesbrough's behalf. The scheme can fund heat pumps and insulation for privately owned homes rated EPC D to G, mostly for lower-income households. Start with the GOV.UK form.

What a proper quote includes

A room-by-room heat loss calculation, a list of radiators to change, the cylinder size and where it goes, the unit position with a noise check, and the expected running efficiency. If a quote lacks these, ask for them.

Our air source heat pumps guide and heat pump cost guide explain what to expect.

Permission

One unit on a house is normally permitted development if it's within the size limit and meets noise rules. Check if you're in a conservation area or a listed building.

Borough boundaries

Thornaby sits in Stockton-on-Tees and Redcar and Guisborough in Redcar and Cleveland, so local grant routes there run through those councils. The national Boiler Upgrade Scheme is the same wherever you live in England.

Middlesbrough homes and what they need

Victorian and Edwardian terraces

Solid walls lose more heat, so insulation matters first. A small back yard can take the unit, but keep it away from the neighbour's window and the alley gate.

Interwar and postwar semis

Often the easiest installs. Fill the cavity, top up the loft, and many radiators may only need modest upsizing.

Newer estates on the southern edge

Well-insulated detached homes may need only a few radiator changes. Check the estate's rules on equipment visible from the street.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Middlesbrough work across areas including Linthorpe, Acklam, Marton, Nunthorpe, Coulby Newham, Ormesby, Hemlington, Thornaby, Redcar and Guisborough.

Questions people in Middlesbrough ask

Will my bills go up?

It depends on the tariff, the design and how well the house is insulated. A well-designed system on a heat pump tariff can cost about the same as gas or less.

Can I keep the gas boiler too?

Not if you want the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. It doesn't fund hybrids that keep a gas boiler.
