Mould removal and damp treatment in Gloucester
Get damp diagnosed and treated properly. We pass your request to damp and mould specialists working in Gloucester.
Gloucester's damp problems come from two directions. Condensation is the everyday cause in most homes. Flooding is the occasional but serious one: the 2007 floods left water standing in parts of the county, and homes near the Severn remain at risk.
Gloucester at a glance
- Who owns and rents
- 63.9% of Gloucester households owned their home in 2021, 21.3% rented privately and 13.6% rented from the council or a housing association. Source
- Local grant
- Severn Wye's Warm and Well service delivers the Warm Homes: Local Grant for Gloucester City Council and the other Gloucestershire councils. Homes must be rated EPC D to G with household income under £36,000; the scheme is at capacity and taking waiting list enquiries. Source
- 2007 water outage
- In July 2007 floodwater shut Severn Trent's Mythe treatment works, cutting mains water to around 140,000 households in Tewkesbury, Cheltenham and Gloucester. Supplies were not fully restored until 2 August. Source
After a flood
Walls soaked by floodwater take months to dry. Remove wet plasterboard, carpets and insulation quickly, then dry the structure with dehumidifiers before redecorating. Painting too soon traps moisture and brings mould back.
Ask a surveyor to check moisture readings before you replaster. Insurers often require this too.
Tenants' rights
Over a fifth of Gloucester households rent privately and about one in seven rents from a social landlord. Social tenants are covered by Awaab's Law, which sets timescales for landlords to investigate and fix damp and mould.
Private tenants should report damp in writing and keep records. If the landlord fails to act, contact Gloucester City Council's housing standards team.
Stopping condensation mould
Keep the heating at a steady low level rather than switching it fully off, ventilate bathrooms and kitchens, and dry washing outside or with a vented dryer. Our removing mould from walls guide covers safe cleaning, and our window condensation guide covers daily habits.
When to call a specialist
Call in a damp specialist if mould covers more than a small patch, comes back within weeks of cleaning, or sits alongside a musty smell, tide marks or rotting skirting. Those suggest water getting in, not just condensation.
Choose a surveyor who is independent of the company selling the treatment, or at least ask for photographs and moisture readings with the report.
Gloucester homes and what they need
1930s to 1960s semis
Cold spots behind wardrobes on outside walls are classic mould sites. Move furniture a few centimetres from the wall and check cavity insulation.
Victorian terraces near the centre
Solid walls absorb rain if pointing and gutters fail. Fix the outside before treating the inside.
Newer estates on the south and east edges
In a home built recently, mould is usually a sign the ventilation has failed or been switched off. Check fans run and trickle vents are open.
Areas covered
Engineers who cover Gloucester work across areas including Kingsholm, Longlevens, Hucclecote, Barnwood, Abbeydale, Tuffley, Tredworth, Barton, Quedgeley and Kingsway.
