Damp and mould removal in Huddersfield

A damp specialist finds out where the moisture comes from, whether it's condensation, rain or ground water, and fixes the cause.

In the Colne and Holme valleys, houses built into the hillside often have a back wall partly underground. Earth against stone means damp, and a ground-floor room with that wall can grow mould even when the rest of the house is dry.

Elsewhere in town the usual cause is condensation on cold solid walls. The fix is completely different, so the survey has to come first.

Housing types
In Kirklees, 34.2% of households live in a semi, 31.5% in a terrace and 21.6% in a detached house. Purpose-built flats make up 9.6%. Source

Below-ground walls

Water pushing through a retaining wall needs a waterproofing system, often a cavity drain membrane with a drainage channel. Fans and dehumidifiers won't stop it. Ask the surveyor to check whether outside ground levels have risen against the wall over the years, which is common on sloping plots.

Condensation in stone houses

Steady low heating, lids on pans, and drying washing outdoors or near an open window all help. Our window condensation guide explains why glass streams on cold mornings. Our guide on removing mould from walls covers safe cleaning for small patches.

Tenants' rights

About 19% of Kirklees households rent privately and 11% from the council. Landlords must deal with damp and mould that makes a home unfit to live in. Social housing tenants are also protected by Awaab's Law, which sets time limits for investigating and fixing serious damp and mould.

Report it in writing with photos. Council tenants can report it to Kirklees Council's housing repairs service.

What a good survey includes

The surveyor should take moisture readings at different heights, look at the outside of the wall, check gutters, ground levels and pointing, and ask how you heat and ventilate the house. A survey that ends with a sales pitch for injected damp-proofing and nothing else is a warning sign.

Stone-built terraces and cottages

Cement render or hard cement pointing on stone traps moisture. Replacing it with a breathable lime mix often lets walls dry out.

Interwar and postwar semis

Cold bridging around windows and at the junction of wall and ceiling is a common place for mould. Better loft insulation at the eaves often helps.

Areas covered

Engineers who cover Huddersfield work across areas including Lindley, Marsh, Edgerton, Almondbury, Lockwood, Birkby, Fartown, Newsome, Holmfirth and Marsden.

Questions people in Huddersfield ask

Should I buy a dehumidifier?

For condensation in a room where washing dries, a dehumidifier pulls a surprising amount of water from the air. Against damp coming through stone from outside or below ground, it does very little.

Is black mould dangerous?

Mould can trigger breathing problems and make asthma worse, especially for children and older people. Clean small patches promptly and get the cause fixed.
